Comment in support of Prop 1
In the aftermath of the frightening and devastating Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the San Francisco Black & Jewish Unity Coalition (“UC”) has joined the California Future of Abortion Council campaign coalition to advocate collaboratively for statutory and constitutional changes and funding necessary to improve access to abortion care, support abortion providers and address gaps in the health care system. Along with other California Future of Abortion Council campaign coalition members, we endorse Prop 1, which would enshrine the right to abortion and contraceptives in the California State Constitution, on the ballot in November.
According to the Washington Post, 1 in 3 women and reproductively capable people assigned as female at birth have had their abortion rights stripped away. As the trigger bans go into effect, some states will have brutal consequences for those seeking, providing, or assisting in abortion care and be subject to private citizen lawsuits to enforce harsh statutes. In Texas, doctors who perform abortions could get life sentences. Right-wing lawmakers are doubling down by coming after contraceptives and other basic reproductive services. It is up to us to fight back. The UC urges every California voter to show up to the polls this November and vote YES on Proposition 1.
